The Samling is a small country house hotel above the north end of Windermere, off the A591 between Windermere and Ambleside. With only a dozen rooms, suites and cottages it is quiet and personal rather than a full-service resort.
Rooms run from Classics to Suites, each named after a Lake District place. The restaurant is the main reason people come, with a chef's table, alfresco dining in summer and a wine list the hotel puts at the centre of its offer. It suits couples looking for a food-led stay; there is no spa or pool.
